Choosing an EHR: A Practice Owner's Selection Checklist

The wrong EHR costs years of frustration. This checklist covers workflow fit, billing integration, support quality, and the demo questions that reveal the truth.

Score fit before features

List your ten most common encounters and ask the vendor to show those exact workflows in a demo — not their standard script. Features you will never use do not matter; a slow charge screen does.

Billing integration matters as much as charting: confirm claim scrubbing, clearinghouse performance, and reporting are native.

Interrogate the details

Ask for the implementation timeline in writing, including who does data migration and how patient records, templates, and outstanding balances move.

Ask existing practices of your size and specialty about support responsiveness after go-live.

Confirm the total cost: licenses, interfaces, e-prescribing, patient portal, and annual increases.

How Precision helps

We have run EHR conversions for many practices — selection scoring, data migration, parallel billing, and go-live support — so nothing is lost and revenue does not dip during the switch.
